The Slave and the Tricky Lion. Week 3 Story

Check out my new website Here

Please check out the story at the website instead of on my blog!!!

A slave named Androcles once escaped and fled to the forest. Once he arrived in the forest he heard loud roars and moans coming from behind a large tree. The slave, being meddlesome, decided to investigate the sounds. Upon coming around the tree he saw it was the Lion. With instincts kicking in Androcles decided to run as fast as he could deeper into the forest.

After a while Androcles noticed the lion did not chase him at all. Thinking this was odd and being curious natured Androcles decided to go back and check on the lion. When he arrived he noticed the lion had a large thorn in his paw. He walked up to the lion and went to remove the thorn. When he began to remove it he noticed the thorn had just been stuck between the claws of the lion and realized this was a trick!

Androcles began to run as fast as he could to try and get away from the lion and finally got into a cave where he found old rotten meat and bones scavenged everywhere, he had run right into the lion’s den.  The lion showed up moments later and things did not end well for Androcles as he made the lion work harder than he wanted to. All he left was a foot with peculiar markings.

When Androcles master came looking for him, the same roars, moans, and groans were coming from around that large tree close to that cave. As his master went toward the sounds he saw a foot and new immediately he was in trouble. He heard a branch break behind him and he turned his head to look when he was met with the large fangs of the lions’ mouth. The rest is history.

Curiosity killed the cat. Or fed it.

What was this cat so curious about? He better be careful

Authors Note:

The story of Androcles and the lion is a tale of gratitude. Androcles, as slave, escaped his master and found himself in the forest when he came across an injured lion. The lion had a thorn in his paw which Androcles removed. The lion was so grateful that he took Androcles to his cave and fed him the meat, which he hunted, to survive. Eventually, both Androcles and the lion were captured by the slave’s master. Androcles was sent to be ravaged by the lion in an arena but to the surprise of the Emperor, the lion ran up to Androcles and licked his hands instead. The emperor was so surprised by this act that he released both Androcles and the Lion to be free.

  1. Hi Zack,
Great story. I like how the ending changed from being happy, to being sad. Most of the stories I have read have had happy endings, so it was nice for there to be a change. I also like how you didn't change the characters and kept some original aspects. I would have never guessed the lion to be a trickster! Great job!

  2. Hi Zack! I like that you changed the story's ending and moral! I thought it was interesting that both the slave and the master get eaten; the lion doesn't discriminate based on who might have better or worse morals. I also like that you changed where the drama takes place. The lion's den is a dramatic addition to the story. It would be fun if you included your motivation for changing the story the way you did in the author's note. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading your story!

  3. Hey Zack! Great job with the story! It is refreshing to see something do something so unique! I personally kinda like sad/bad endings! Just because they are kinda rare to come by. I think some of the best and useful stories come from the ones with bad endings personally! I think your writing style is really easy to read and I love the picture of the cat it was perfect!
    Great job!

Week 5 Story: The Tale of Johnny Gloke

Check out the stroy on my portfolio Here! Johnny Gloke was a farmer by trade, but, like a man of spirit, he grew tired of his trade and wished to follow a path that would lead to honor and fame. So for a time he was much fonder of sitting around thinking of what he could do rather than tending the crop. One day Johnny Gloke was walking around his farm trying to find something to do. He was in the barn and came across a leather football. He walked outside and saw a beehive hanging from a tree about 40 yards away. He wound up and three the football and stuck the beehive right in the middle and knocked it down. He was overjoyed at his success and his heart rose to the doing of the great deed. He now knew what his path would be to fortune and honor. So he set out to find the best college football program to go play for. He grabbed his football and headed for college. He came across a college, The University of Oklahoma. Oklahoma needed a quarterback and Johnny Glock knew he was th...

Learning Challenge: I wish my teacher knew....

This is the first time I have seen this story. I think it is a good way to connect with kids and really understand that not every kid is the same and you have to adapt as teacher to kids environments to connect with them and find out the best way for them to learn. Keeping this anonymous is key because a lot of these children would be embarrassed to tell others and now a days would probably get made fun of for it. I think this teacher had an amazing idea and I hope that teachers all across the country are using this method to help there students feel comfortable admitting something because I think that will help them with being able to swallow their pride and ask for help later in life. Its all about trust. Photo from NYT

Turks and Caicos... My FAVORITE Place

My favorite place in the whole world is Providenciales Island in Turks and Caicos. I have been going every New years week for the last three years and I absolutely love it there. The water is a color that is indescribable and is just amazing to look at. It is so clear you can see the bottom of the ocean almost every where you go! The food and culture is a big mix of a lot of places, so you definitely can find something you enjoy. My favorite thing to do there is to go snorkeling as it is one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive in the world! The water color and white sand beaches are stunning!                                                                   Photo by Agile Levine As you can see the colors are magnificent and the water is so clear!
